Representative Director Yuta Hirayama

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your understanding and cooperation in the activities of the Tsukuba Smart City Consortium.
Tsukuba City was selected as a Super City in 2022, attracting significant attention both domestically and internationally. Since then, we have been actively undertaking various initiatives to promote regional development and implement innovative solutions that enhance the quality of life for our community.
To successfully implement a smart city, building a sustainable business model is crucial, and public-private partnerships are indispensable for this purpose. Our council serves as a platform for such practical implementation, and we strongly wish to build a successful model here in Tsukuba and expand it nationwide and worldwide.
We sincerely appreciate your continued support and cooperation.

From Tsukuba to the World—Creating the Future City
Tsukuba is taking on a bold new challenge. Through the Tsukuba Super Science City Initiative, this city—leading the way in science and technology—aims to tackle societal challenges ahead of the world and build an inclusive future where no one is left behind.
As a designated Super City under Japan’s national strategy, Tsukuba receives strong government support. At its core, the Tsukuba Smart City Consortium brings together universities, research institutions, businesses, and government agencies to design the city of the future. Through ongoing dialogue with residents and hands-on engagement with local issues, we are accelerating the implementation of cutting-edge technologies, strengthening data integration, and boldly advancing regulatory and institutional reforms.
This consortium is more than just a place for discussions or experiments. It is an innovative platform that develops real-world solutions to global challenges—such as an aging population, environmental sustainability, and urban resilience—using Tsukuba as a living laboratory. By pioneering the future of urban development, Tsukuba will help Japan reclaim its leadership on the global stage, delivering groundbreaking technologies and services to the world. If you share our vision for social transformation, we invite you to join us.
Exploring Tomorrow, Tsukuba

Since its establishment, Tsukuba Science City has been home to leading research institutions, each developing its expertise and distinct identity. Building on this strong foundation, collaboration among these institutions has gained momentum. In 2022, Tsukuba, alongside Osaka, was designated as a Super City, a National Strategic Special Zone.
As a core national university within Tsukuba Science City, the University of Tsukuba has long worked alongside the city and other institutions in research and education. When Tsukuba City applied for its Super City designation, we launched the Tsukuba Future City Project (led by Professor Kenji Suzuki) to support the development of its vision. Following the city’s designation, we expanded this initiative by establishing the Institute for Human Smart Cities, creating an interdisciplinary framework to accelerate the real-world application of research outcomes. Many of our faculty members have since been actively involved, contributing to the advancement of the Tsukuba Super Science City Initiative.
However, bringing this vision to life is not something the city or university can achieve alone. Advancing and implementing cutting-edge technologies requires close collaboration between research institutions, businesses, and residents. With its transition into a general incorporated association, this consortium has fostered even stronger partnerships among its members, paving the way for deeper cooperation.
To meet the high expectations placed on us by the government and international stakeholders, and to address regional challenges while shaping the future of society, we will continue driving this initiative forward together.
